Many homeowners try a myriad of techniques to get rid of the mold problems with decking. Yet the mold just keeps coming back! Is there a permanent solution?

In order to understand this mold problem, you need to realize that mold gets nutrients from cellulose-based materials and other organic substances. This includes wood. Most decking is made of wood, thus providing a food source for the fungi. Another point to realize is that mold and mildew are everywhere, you can never get rid of it all. But getting rid of what you can, keeps your home healthy and your deck looking pristine.

The key to solving the ‘mold on decking’ mystery, is to prevent the aggregation of mold spores in the first place. Once the mold takes hold and begins to proliferate, as you may already know, it’s a battle to remove it.

One solution to the problem is composite decking. This is a technology that is resistant to mildew, microbes such as mold, and other pests such as termites. You’ll also be doing your part in keeping the earth green, as the material is eco-friendly and is made from 50% recycled material such as plastic. It is not completely maintenance free, but rather, low maintenance.

Usually mold appears on decking solely because of high levels of moisture. It may be a good idea to gap the decking properly at a minimum of 1/8” so that trapped moisture can escape. Also make sure that gutters are not leaking or over flowing on the deck.

Another simple way to prevent mold from growing on your deck is to sweep it weekly especially in season such as spring and summer when pollen levels are high.

Water basting is a safe and effective way to get rid of mold on decking, as well as off the exterior walls of your home. It’s always safer to call in a professional, but it you choose to do the job yourself, please make sure you wear appropriate safety equipment such as goggles or safety glasses, gloves and dust mask. Don’t forget to protect any furniture and plants around the deck. Also, wear old clothes while doing the job, and make sure they are thoroughly washed soon after.

Tip: If possible, try spraying with hot water since most fungi cannot survive temperatures over 140 F. Again this is probably something that should be done by a professional, but should you choose to do it yourself, maybe you could make sure that young children are not home, and other people around the house know that you’re carrying out the procedure.

There are also affordable cleaning products available at basic chain stores. Some of these are extremely effective in loosening up the mold with no scrubbing at all. All you have to do is just water blast the residue away.

Getting rid of mold from your decking can be a frustrating and tedious job. The best solution is prevention. But once mold shows up again there are several techniques and cleaning agents that can help to keep your decking looking pristine.

Ah, the open sea, the fresh air, and the clear blue skies. That is the imagery that you hope your boat can paint for you over and over again. But boats by nature are based in moisture rich areas, and moisture is fertile grounds for mold growth. Quite simply, a mold is a kind of fungi that finds humid and warm conditions particularly fertile to form on. This is the reason they are commonly found in place like the shower or basements and attics. And of course, boats.

Fret not, though. Today, you can find an array of ways to get rid of that mold problem you might have. But before we get to solve the problem, let’s address ways in which you can prevent it.

If you find that the seats or upholstery have become damp in your boat, then we suggest you do what it takes to dry it up. Usually they are detachable and hanging them out to dry is not a problem. You should also see try to let as much direct sunlight fall on it as possible and allow in ample ventilation. Good air circulation will draw the moisture out of your upholstery, so letting that sun shine and ventilating is something you can do even during the fall or winter.

Its also always good idea to clean up your boat as thoroughly as possible before you leave it at the Marina or store it away for the winter. This will make sure you don’t have to worry about frozen dirt in the spring. And it will also give you chance to make sure that there are no damp spots in the boat and especially its upholstery.

Consider taking off the boat’s convertible top and other canvas accessories before you pack it up for the winter. But do this only if you have space to hand them out in a garage or some place like that, as rolling them up could spell trouble when vermin find it a cozy home.

In any case, if you still have mold on your boat then you have many options of ready made products that can deal with it. It might be wiser to use organic and natural products though since they will cause very little impact on the environment and yet get the job done well. And the prices aren’t much different from regular cleaners anyway. How these cleaners work is, you just add the solution to some hot water. Then, it’s the same as wiping or cleaning anything else with a brush or sponge. You can also fill an empty spray bottle to spot clean if you should so chose. Most solutions are usable on sailcloth, fiber glass, wood as well as aluminum. As long as your experience of the open sea is not ruined by mold, it’s going to be an enjoyable one!

Why would mold want to grow in the crawl space under your house of all places? The answer to this question is that the crawl space under your house has the prime conditions for mold and mildew to grow. Mold requires warm dark and moist conditions, and nutrients for optimal growth.

Crawl spaces are usually dark. They are a nutrient paradise, as they contain dust and wood. It is also a hard task to control moisture there. This means that crawl spaces have a higher chance of forming mold colonies than any other part of your house. It is therefore really important that you do regular investigations of the area, as this can affect the stability of your house. Look out for back growths growing on wooden materials. Especially watch out for the mold on frames, as this would be the easiest route for it to spread to other areas of the house.

Another tell-tell sign of a mold problem is a musty smell the fungi produces. Once it has reached the stage where you can smell it from your house, then the problem is escalated. Something needs to be done before beams supporting your house begin to collapse.

The problem can largely be solved by ventilating the crawl space adequately. A clearance of about 4-5 feet will reduce the problem dramatically. It is also important to make sure that all the walls of your foundation have vents.

Decks contribute to the moisture in the crawl space. This is because the soil under the decks receives very little air and remains moist. This moisture eventually seeps its way into the crawl space.

There are several courses of action that you can take:

1. Cover the entire of the crawl space surface with some sort of porous material like gravel
2. Use a fan to make sure that the air is well ventilated and circulating well.
3. Use a dehumidifier to constantly draw water out and replace air
4. Install a vapor barrier – Warm air travels upwards.

This same principal applies to the air in the crawl spaces. It is sucked up into the house through cracks. Remember that the air in the crawl space contains spores and other dangerous toxins. A vapor barrier is a waterproof lining that covers the soil on the surface of the crawl space in the stale air from the crawl space from rising into the house. This also prevents that musty odor that mold causes from entering the house.

The reasons to clean up the mold in your craw space are endless. The primary issue most people are concerned with is their health and how the mold may affect it. Apart from spores, fungi also produce toxins that can cause a number of different reactions. One of the most common reactions to mold is asthma, but toxins from mold in crawl spaces has been linked to several other more devastating diseases.

Keeping your crawl spaces mold free doesn’t have to be difficult. Many different measures can be put up to prevent mold from destroying your house and ruining your health.

Mold is a form of fungus that can easily grow on the walls of your home, if given the right conditions. Molds thrive on cellulose based material such as wooden on cupboards, wall paper, and other organic materials. Molds also require warm, dark conditions. It is imperative that you get rid of molds for the sake of your health.

Molds in the interior walls of your home are hazardous to your health, especially if you have children. This is because the fungi produce airborne mycotoxins that can be inhaled. These mycotoxins hamper the function of your immune system. When fungi multiply, they release spores which can cause allergies. They can also lodge in the respiratory system, further disrupting the immune system from working at its best. The longer your walls are exposed to mold, the more adverse the effects. You must get rid of mold as soon as it begins to appear on your walls. Many children with asthma are extremely sensitive to mold. Ridding the house of mold can greatly decrease a child’s use of an inhaler.

When getting rid of mold from your walls, make sure you clean your upholstery and carpets thoroughly as well. This is because these furnishings often contain a lot of dust and other organic matter such as dead skin that could serve as nutrients for the mold to spread.

If the mold in your house is extensive (i.e. it’s not just a small patch), it may be advisable to move out of the house temporarily. If that is not possible, you should try to avoid being in the affected room.

Usually in situation where the home has previously been flooded, there has been a leakage, or where the air is humid, mold will thrive. The solution for this is to dry out the home as fast as possible and allowing as much air in the house as possible. During the day, it may be wise to take down curtains and blinds to make sure the affected areas receive as much sunlight as possible.

Another solution, and probably the fastest and safest solution (especially if the problem is extensive), is to call in a professional. There should be may options for you in the Yellow pages under Fire And Water Damage Restoration. If you choose to do the job yourself make sure you:

1. Wear protective gear i.e. gloves, long sleeved top, and a mask over your mouth.
2. Move your furniture out of they room
3. Move all food out of the room and cover it up
4. Throw away all material that you use during the cleaning process.

Most people ignore molds on their walls even though they may know what there is a risk. The sad thing is that there is no way to know how much health damage mycotoxins have caused until it is too late. Mycotoxins have been linked to cancer, heart disease, chronic fatigue, lupus and a whole spectrum of other diseases. So it is imperative that you get rid of the mold on the walls of your house.

Molds are species of fungi that are multicellular and thrive in a biodegradable
environment. They usually survive on decaying organic matter that provides them
with the essential nutrients. The humid environment is the major cause for the
mold of the growth which gives them the ability to also grow on walls and roof
tops that have seepages. However, this unique adaptability of the mold can also
prove hazardous to health. This is because in the process of fermentation mold
releases a toxin called the mycotoxins that can be injurious to health.
Therefore it is necessary to have mold preventers in order to stop the growth of
mold in your house.

Are you having trouble with your ceiling and walls being covered by molds that
have ruined the entire look of your interior with black and green spots on the
walls? Then it is necessary that you should switch to mold preventers.
Fungicides are affective in stemming the growth of the mold as it prevents the
interconnect mycelium of the fungi from creating further networks which thus
leads to removal of mold colonies from the surface of a material. Since moisture
is the main ingredient that is conducive to the growth of the mold, as such it
becomes necessary to purchase building materials for construction of house that
are water resistant.

Hurricane Katrina and mold has displayed an interesting example of how mold
could devastate the condition of the house. During hurricane Katrina as numerous
houses were submerged under water, it became a sight to see in every house the
growth of mold. During Hurricane Katrina, mold was the growing problem that
residents were complaining of even after the flood waters resided. It is
particularly necessary to prevent mold in this situation by covering the walls
by anti fungicide paint and plaster. Posing a major construction and health
hazard during hurricane Katrina, molds proved to be an important lesson for
those residents that did not have adequate mold prevention earlier.

You may ask—- is mold dangerous to the overall health of the individual?
Well, studies that have been recently conducted have shown that residents living
in houses that have mold on their roofs and walls have risk inhalation of a
toxin called mycotoxins which are secreted by molds during fermentation process.
If one has been exposed to Chaetomium or Stachybotrys types of molds, then an
individual will show serious symptoms of decreased mental awareness, bronchitis,
fatigue, heart ailments and other symptoms that can prove detrimental to the
person’s health.

It is necessary for people to be aware of the mold symptoms as they are
hazardous to life. An early exposure of the symptoms to a physician will reduce
the risk of any infection. However, on the exposure of these symptoms it is
important to take medicines from your own local pharmacy to enable antibiotic
treatment of the mold infection.

Therefore, molds are a bio-hazard because of which killing of the molds becomes
necessary not only in terms of health but also in terms of assuring an adequate
housing environment, where you can ensure a mold free household.

Molds are the microscopic organism which invade the food items and develop upon
them. They are basically microscopic filaments which appear like spongy grass
like substance on the food surface if viewed through naked eyes. These
microscopic cylindrical tubes of molds are called as hyphae. The spongy material
of molds is actually the numerous bacteria which are present in the air. When
these bacterias find favorable condition they settle down on the food stuff and
break down it to simple form for their consumption.

They can grow and develop at any place where there is enough moisture and
warmth. Basically, mold grows on food items which are old and stale. If a mold
growing food is consumed it can cause severe food poisoning which might
completely destroy the working of digestive system of the body.

Apart from the stale food items, molds can grow at any place in your house.
Specially, any cellulose based items, like wooden doors and windows of the attic
where everyday cleaning is not possible. Dampness is the most favorable
condition for molds to grow. Damp walls and old paper piles are also another
location for them to grow. Paper is also one of the mold growing items because
paper absorbs water from the atmosphere.

Other organic substances which can be a dwelling of molds are fabrics. Carpets
spread on the floor contain a lot of dust and dirt which is formed of
macrobiotic matter, such as dead skin cells of animals which attract these
microscopic enzymes called molds. Molds spores which infect the air can cause
various viral infections. Cold is one of the common diseases which will affect a
person who inhales these mold spores.

So, to prevent molds from growing in your house, take following precautions:

Keep the ventilation of the house properly managed as insufficient ventilation
is one of the major causes of molds growth. Let sufficient amount of sunlight
enter inside your house to remove the dampness from the house. Sunlight not only
removes the dampness but kills microscopic enzymes which cause molds.

Clean your house, specially those corners of the house which are damp and
moist. Make weekly cleaning plan for your attic as molds spores spread very
fast. If your attic is already mold infected then they might come down to your
outer walls as well. Time is one factor which helps in growth of molds as molds
have a growth period which falls between 24 hours and 10 days, provided there is
an ample amount of favorable conditions for its growth and multiplication. So,
if your out-house is not been cleaned for months, now is the right time to kill
those growing black molds.

Refrigerate the food items carefully. Food items should not be kept longer and
should be consumed as early as possible. If they are old enough for consumption
dispose them. This will prevent growth of mold on the food stuff being
refrigerated. Following these precautions can prevent the mold from growing.

During disasters, such as flood and fire, mold can destroy the houses
completely. The molds are found growing in damp and dark places of homes. The
growth of the mold proves harmful not only for family but for your dwelling
place too.

It has been seen that a few species of molds are harmless but some of them
might act as venom for the members of your family. For individuals who are
suffering from some kind of allergy, mold can further aggravate their condition.

A wide array of reasons can cause the growth of the mold; some of the reasons
comprise water leakage, floods and high levels of humidity. In case a person
notices mildewed stench at his dwelling or some member of the family is
suffering from mold toxin symptoms of allergy and sinus then presence of mold
should be checked.

Mold belongs to the fungi animal kingdom and as any other fungi feed on dead
and decaying matter to obtain their nutrients. This feeding process is called
fermentation which leads to the release of organic compounds in the air. These
organic compounds results in mildewed stench that is often associated with mold
toxin symptom, such as allergic reactions, which are inhaled by the organisms.
This mold toxin induces symptoms that comprise headaches, dizziness and fever.

For preventing the mold it is necessary to take professional help as these mold
releases mold spores that can intensify health problems. Proper knowledge and
methods are very essential in order to prevent mold.

For the growth of mold spores into spores, it requires nutrients, time and
moisture. Cellulose aids in the growth of mold spores into molds. The growth of
mold begins from 22 hours to 10 days with the aid of enhancing conditions. The
moisture plays a crucial role in commencing the process of decay.

Proper ventilation and lack of humidity in houses can act as mold preventers.
The stirring wind acts as a mold preventers as it has effect of dehydrating by
reducing the humidity.

For killing or ceasing the growth of mold spores, it is essential to take steps
for the prevention of mold from spreading from one area to other in the house.
The dust should be minimized while cleaning or killing the mold spores, as it
enhances the growth by stirring it. Dust in the air serves as a chief means of
mold spores transportation.

The mold and the materials infested with molds should be properly and discarded
into plastic bags that are heavy duty. But for preventing the mold growth, the
bags should not be transported from one area to the other. This will avoid
regeneration and scattering of mold. For cleaning or killing the mold, the rooms
should be cleaned separately.

After removing the moisture, clean the mold by applying soap for removing the
molds followed by a disinfectant for killing the mold spores. The surface should
be cleaned properly as the mold spores are very minute and can spread easily
through the environment.

Mold is a broader term and encompasses all species of fungi which can be
studied under microscope and grow in the hyphae, the multicellular filaments.
Yeasts are the single celled fungi. Molds are generally found in the division of
the zygomycota, ascomycota and deuteromycota. They do not form the phylogenetic
grouping. Molds can be beneficial in preserving certain foods and beverages,
enzymes and the antibiotics but at the same time they are harmful as they rot
the food and even cause some human and animal diseases. However the growth of
molds can hamper the condition of the house. This was seen during Hurricane
Katrina where mold had devastated many houses.

Our environment is not mold free and there are several mold spores that are
present in the Earth’s biosphere. Spores need three basic factors for the growth
of the mold namely nutrients, moisture and the time. The ideal situation for
molds to grow is moisture. When the most deadly hurricane Katrina hit the area
of United States the worst affected was the property. Due to excessive moisture
there was growth of the molds on the walls of the infrastructures. Though the
houses were not flooded yet the exterior and the interior of the buildings
suffered a great loss. Thus Hurricane Katrina and mold were two factors that
disturbed American residents at that time. The basic and the primary reason for
the growth of the molds in a building are all materials which are cellulose
based like wood, paper, cardboard. Soap and fabrics and fabric are some of the
organic materials which even facilitate the growth of the mold in buildings.
Molds can be present in any form like in the basements, plumbing pipes or the
crawling space. When there is no proper ventilation facility the growth of the
mold cannot be doubted. When the hurricane Katrina hit the areas of United
States most of the buildings witnessed the growth of molds on both the outer and
inner walls of buildings.

There are numerous ways to prevent the growth of molds in the buildings. The
first and the foremost being in mold prevention is that when a house is
designed, the proper ventilation should be kept in mind. When there is a free
flow of air, it lowers the humidity which augments the rate of mold growth.

Mold prevention is also necessary for various other reasons. The growth of
molds affects the human body and proves hazardous for the people. Growth of a
mold in a house can lead to various diseases and allergies like asthma and
sinus. There are numerous ways through which an individual can become a victim
of mold growth. If an individual comes in contact with the mold spores or
touches the wall which is affected by the growth of the molds, he can be
affected by various diseases. Also, a person in contact with the molds if one
eats fruits or vegetables which are affected by the mold. Last but not the
least, way through which people are exposed to molds is breathing in a basement
which is affected by the molds.

The easy ways to kill the black mold is to contact the professional. There are
several methods to kill the molds. Applying safe shield is the best and
sure-shot method to escape the hazardous effects of molds. One must first search
the possible hide-outs of these molds; inspect the type of the mold, and then
treat accordingly. Before targeting the areas, an individual must take all
necessary preventions like wearing gloves, wearing a mask and goggles and
washing the hands thoroughly after the treatment.

Old and antique pieces are often prone to develop mold on them, if not taken
proper care of. Mold or mildew can be better described as a kind of fungus which
is mostly found in damp and humid regions. This mold can easily be located on
bits of wood, natural clothes or any substance which is even the slightest touch
of organic elements like soil or food. This is one of the main reasons why
antique wood furniture is more susceptible to develop mold on them. Several ways
on how to clean mold from antique wood furniture are discussed here below.

One of the most important questions which bother individuals is how to clean
molds from antique wood furniture. Though there are several mold preventers
available in the market today, it is better to observe proper precautions to
prevent antique wood furniture become mold-infested. These preventive measures
include removing any traces of dampness and cleaning the furniture regularly.

The mildew fungus requires a temperature of at least 75 degrees to 85 degrees
Fahrenheit. People often tend to confuse this mildew fungus with dust and
ignore it. Individuals who come across mold on antique wooden furniture can
check it by placing a little amount of chlorine on it. If the spot on the
furniture is mildew fungus, the spot will automatically disappear.

People often keep their antique wooden furniture which is not being use
currently in their basements. Basements are one of the target areas where mold
develops on wooden furniture. This primarily happens because basements are often
the most neglected and damp areas of a house with little or no access to any
form of direct sunlight. The area, in which antique furniture is placed, should
always be well-ventilated and regularly cleaned in order to prevent accumulation
of molds.

There are also high chances of an underground basement being continually wet
because of leaking pipe fittings or faulty/outdated hardware settings.
Accumulation of molds on antique wooden furniture can be reduced significantly
if proper stress is laid on the implementation of good quality waterproofing
materials and hardware solutions. Stagnant water should never be allowed near
wooden furniture as it acts as the breeding ground for the mold causing fungi.

People are often worried about methods on how to clean mold from antique wood
furniture. This can be easily done by cleaning the surface of antique furniture
with a mild detergent. This should be immediately followed up by rubbing off the
furniture with a dry cloth to remove any traces of dampness.

Several other methods which can be adopted to remove mold from antique
furniture include using powerful cleaners which are specially designed to
eliminate any trace of mold from antique furniture and make it shining again
like brand new. Though, a patch test should be carried out to check whether
these cleaners do not distort the look of the furniture. But generally, these
cleaners made from wax are a sure-shot way to eliminate mold from furniture and
prevent its recurrence as it forms a protective layer over the surface of the
wooden furniture.

Molds consist of all kinds of microscopic fungi that develop in the form of multicellular filaments. These multicellular filaments are called hyphae. Molds do not appear in the form of a particular phylogenetic or taxonomic grouping but can be found in the form of Ascomycota, Zygomycota and Deuteromycota. The growth of the mold can be useful in the production of numerous antibiotics, foods,
enzymes and beverages. However, they can also be harmful to some other eatables.

There are several species of molds such as thermophiles, acquatic species,
opportunistic pathogens and saprotrophs. Molds derive the energy to survive from
the organic matter on which they live and not from photosynthesis. Molds produce
hydrolytic enzymes from the dominant hyphal tips. These enzymes breakdown
compound biopolymers like cellulose and starch into simple particles which can
enter the hyphae. Mold in this way causes decomposition of organic matter and
makes reprocessing of nutrients present in the ecosystem possible. The
development of micoorganisms is restricted by hydrolytic enzymes and mycotoxins
which is produced by molds.

Molds produce through tiny spores. The mold spores may be sexual or asexual;
there are some that produce both kinds. They may consist of many or single
nucleus.

Molds breed on a dead organic substance. However, their presence is only
evident to the unaided eye when mold colonies develop. Some molds can breed at
temperature as low as 20°C. Some circumstances do not encourage growth; molds
can survive in a dormant state.

Black bread mold or Rhizopus stolonifer is a commonly circulated Mucoralean mold. Bread mold grows quickly at a temperature between 15 and 30 degree Celsius. This is an asexual mode spore that is produced within sporangia, which break the spores when they grow up. Rhizopus stolonifer or black bread mold is a heterothallic species where sexual production takes place only when opposite mating kinds come in contact.

Black bread mold has an epidemic distribution. As a result it can cause
opportunistic infections to humans, such as zygomycosis. Usually they breed on
soft fruits, such as peaches and strawberries and bread. A moist bread piece
kept in a humid and enclosed container gathers bread mold within a couple of
days. The bread mold breeds on bread and expand from spores, which float in the
air. The mold spore after it drops onto the moist bread grows by distributing
branching threads. A cell wall and cell membrane consists of many nuclei and
cytoplasm that enclose the threads. The threads develop down into the bread and
manufacture digestive enzymes that will modify the bread into a liquid type.
Growing bread mold soaks up the liquid. Ultimately, a new branching thread goes
down into the bread and spreads the bread mold.

Another kind of mold is Phytophora infestans that causes damage to tomatoes and
potatoes. If a mold spore settles on a leaf of a healthy potato plant in moist
and warm conditions, a new hypha breeds out of it and penetrates the leaf
through a stoma. Then small branches will breed out of the hypha and enter the
walls of the leaf cells with the help of enzymes. The hypha then sucks up
nutrients from the cell filling and develops quickly, disperses throughout the
tissues of the plant. This kind of black mold can parasite can destroy the
entire potato plant. The growth of mold can be prevented by preventing water
clogging and keeping the place dust free.
