Mold is a broader term and encompasses all species of fungi which can be
studied under microscope and grow in the hyphae, the multicellular filaments.
Yeasts are the single celled fungi. Molds are generally found in the division of
the zygomycota, ascomycota and deuteromycota. They do not form the phylogenetic
grouping. Molds can be beneficial in preserving certain foods and beverages,
enzymes and the antibiotics but at the same time they are harmful as they rot
the food and even cause some human and animal diseases. However the growth of
molds can hamper the condition of the house. This was seen during Hurricane
Katrina where mold had devastated many houses.
Our environment is not mold free and there are several mold spores that are
present in the Earth’s biosphere. Spores need three basic factors for the growth
of the mold namely nutrients, moisture and the time. The ideal situation for
molds to grow is moisture. When the most deadly hurricane Katrina hit the area
of United States the worst affected was the property. Due to excessive moisture
there was growth of the molds on the walls of the infrastructures. Though the
houses were not flooded yet the exterior and the interior of the buildings
suffered a great loss. Thus Hurricane Katrina and mold were two factors that
disturbed American residents at that time. The basic and the primary reason for
the growth of the molds in a building are all materials which are cellulose
based like wood, paper, cardboard. Soap and fabrics and fabric are some of the
organic materials which even facilitate the growth of the mold in buildings.
Molds can be present in any form like in the basements, plumbing pipes or the
crawling space. When there is no proper ventilation facility the growth of the
mold cannot be doubted. When the hurricane Katrina hit the areas of United
States most of the buildings witnessed the growth of molds on both the outer and
inner walls of buildings.
There are numerous ways to prevent the growth of molds in the buildings. The
first and the foremost being in mold prevention is that when a house is
designed, the proper ventilation should be kept in mind. When there is a free
flow of air, it lowers the humidity which augments the rate of mold growth.
Mold prevention is also necessary for various other reasons. The growth of
molds affects the human body and proves hazardous for the people. Growth of a
mold in a house can lead to various diseases and allergies like asthma and
sinus. There are numerous ways through which an individual can become a victim
of mold growth. If an individual comes in contact with the mold spores or
touches the wall which is affected by the growth of the molds, he can be
affected by various diseases. Also, a person in contact with the molds if one
eats fruits or vegetables which are affected by the mold. Last but not the
least, way through which people are exposed to molds is breathing in a basement
which is affected by the molds.
The easy ways to kill the black mold is to contact the professional. There are
several methods to kill the molds. Applying safe shield is the best and
sure-shot method to escape the hazardous effects of molds. One must first search
the possible hide-outs of these molds; inspect the type of the mold, and then
treat accordingly. Before targeting the areas, an individual must take all
necessary preventions like wearing gloves, wearing a mask and goggles and
washing the hands thoroughly after the treatment.
